MANILA, Philippines – The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) granted First Gen Corporation (FGEN) the Certificate of Compliance (COC) for its 414-MW combined-cycle natural gas-fired San Gabriel power plant, which is situated in Santa Rita, Batangas.
At present, San Gabriel power plant is the most effectual natural gas-fired power plant across Southeast Asia.
The awarding of COC shows that the power plant has complied with the requirements before its commercial operations, both in technical and financial areas. The Philippine Electricity Market Corporation (PEMC) has also recognized the now commercial status of San Gabriel power plant from testing and commissioning. This also means that the natural gas-fired power plant may also participate in Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).
Through the company’s entirely acquired subsidiary, First Natgas Power Corp. (FNPC), First Gen owns and operates the power plant. The operation of San Gabriel guarantees that Luzon and Visayas grids will have more stable power source.
Siemens AG has the most recent, highly flexible, 59 percent effective gas turbine technology, which was named SGT6-8000H and under “Flex-Plant” brand. This was tapped by the company in order to provide a reliable and more stable grid in the midst of more intermittent renewable energy installations. According to the company, this is the first time Siemens brought the technology into the country.
The Flex-Plant provides a quick ramp up and down of power plant, fast start feature, and daily start and stop capabilities over a wide operating window. From low plant turndown to high plant output, the technology works efficiently.
San Gabriel power plant operates on the cleanest fossil fuel – natural gas. The carbon emissions of the plant are 70 percent lower than coal-fired plants.
First Gen’s natural gas leadership is reaffirmed by the commercialization of San Gabriel power plant. The capacity of its natural gas is now 2,011 MW, which is a combination of the energy company’s four natural gas-fired power plants in Batangas.
